On 02.08.2011, four U.N. peacekeepers originating from Ethiopia were killed by a landmine in the disputed Abyei region of Sudan. These were the first deaths of the new UN blue helmets in the region.
The Government of Khartoum expressed its discontent with the UN and African Union presence in Darfour under the new modified mandate.
